(JOVE331)

Joe Overstreet (b. Conhatta, MS, 1933; d. New York, NY, 2019) was an artist and activist who pushed the boundaries of painting through decades of experiments in abstraction. He began his career in the Bay Area as a fixture of the Beat scene, living in the North Beach section of San Francisco. After moving to New York, he and his partner Corrine Jennings established Kenkeleba House, a gallery that has presented innumerable exhibitions of work by artists of color and women. As part of a generation of Black artists who fought for their visibility in an exclusionary art world, Overstreet was committed to creating paintings that stand alone on formal merit—independent of his identity—and taking an organizer’s role in providing exhibition opportunities to his peers. Overstreet’s work of the late 1950s to the mid-1960s assimilates his interests in Abstract Expressionism, Jazz, and African-American history. Many of his paintings are direct responses to the Civil Rights movement, racism, and the history of lynching.

Overstreet will be featured in the exhibition Edges of Ailey at the Whitney Museum of American Art, on view from September 25, 2024 through February 9, 2025. A major retrospective of Joe Overstreet’s work opens at the Menil Collection in Houston on January 24, 2025, and will travel to the Mississippi Museum of Art in August of 2025.

Paul Waters (b. Philadelphia, PA, 1936) is an African-American artist whose work combines a thoughtful symbolic language with a highly intuitive and playful process. Waters exclusively uses his hands and fingers to apply paint, and a pair of scissors as his “drawing” tool. His canvases are filled with repeated silhouettes made from cut canvas shapes, which reflect his interest in teaching and children’s books, as well as both indigenous traditions and Western painting.Between 1965 and 1972, Paul Waters made large-scale paintings in which painted and cut canvas shapes are collaged onto primed canvases. The silhouetted forms suggest dancers, birds, female warriors, and nature, as well as purely geometric, abstract shapes. They are lyrical works often stained with rich color that suggests naturally occurring hues and pigments. These works celebrate the mythical, aboriginal painting, as well as the work of Matisse. Waters will be featured in the exhibition Edges of Ailey at the Whitney Museum of American Art, on view from September 25, 2024 through February 9, 2025.

Ellsworth Ausby (b. Portsmouth, VA, 1942; d. 2011) was an artist dedicated to reflecting a deeply rooted African aesthetic and cultural heritage. For one of his earliest exhibitions, he wrote “Blackness is the source of the colors, which is the Light.” Ausby’s paintings combine stylized biomorphic and figurative elements with geometric shapes and patterning. By the 1970s, Ausby was making unstretched canvases that were attached directly to the wall. These works utilize high keyed color and suggest sonic patterns and rhythms; the titles are based on 1970s Black colloquial vernacular.  Ausby will be featured in the exhibition Edges of Ailey at the Whitney Museum of American Art, on view from September 25, 2024 through February 9, 2025.

Thomas Sills

Earth, 1960

oil on canvas

111.76h x 111.76w cm

(THSIL051)

Thomas Sills (b. Castalia, NC, 1914; d. 2000) began painting in 1952, inspired by his wife, Jeanne Reynal’s, work and collection of abstract art. He did not have formal training as an artist, but through Reynal he met a wide range of artists: from Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst to Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko. Sills’s earliest paintings were experimental and employed an automatist approach; he used a variety of tools to apply paint and a diversity of materials on the surface of his paintings. By the late 1950s, he began working with an idea of equivalence between figure and ground, so that each form is both the positive and the negative of the form next to it. Often defined by a balance of just two colors, the compositions form radiating, optical sensations. His work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and was acquired by the National Gallery, Washington, DC, in 2023.

(WALJ011)

Walter C. Jackson (b. Holmes County, MS, 1940) is a sculptor whose work combines natural materials—such as wood, sisal and jute fibers—alongside industrial plastic and aluminum. Jackson describes his practice as a “unity of opposites,” containing spiritual considerations—with symbolic reference to both African cosmology and Christian iconography influenced by his Methodist upbringing—within the structure of urban geometries. Jackson fuses traditional totemic forms and contemporary aesthetics of light, movement, and refraction.

Miriam Schapiro

oil on canvas

(MSCHA069)

Miriam Schapiro (b. Toronto, Ontario, 1923; d. Hampton Bays, NY, 2015) is widely known as a pioneer of the Women’s Art Movement and a leading force in American post-World War II art. Following her formal training at the University of Iowa, she moved to New York with her husband, Paul Brach, and integrated into the New York School. Recognized for her colorful and sensuous abstractions of this period, Schapiro showed regularly at André Emmerich Gallery, where in 1958, she was the first woman to have a solo exhibition. Despite considerable success, she felt an outsider to the male-dominated Abstract Expressionism scene and her work of this period explores themes of feminine interiority. In 1972, Schapiro came to CalArts where, along with Judy Chicago, she formed the Feminist Art Program, a radical curriculum for women art students. The program’s first class produced the landmark exhibition, Womanhouse, an installation and performance space that gained international attention and remains a landmark for feminist art. Schapiro’s paintings from the 1960s are on view concurrently in several museum exhibitions: Computer Series. Particles and Waves: Southern California Abstraction and Science, 1945-1990 at the Palm Springs Art Museum; Radical Software: Women, Art & Computing 1960–1991 at Mudam Luxembourg; and Electric Op at Buffalo AKG Art Museum, all on view through February, 2025. Schapiro will also be featured in The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies, 1970-Present at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago from November 9, 2024 through April 13, 2025.

Pat Passlof

Untitled, 1958

oil on paper mounted to canvas

18.0h x 21.0w in
44.45h x 53.34w cm

(PASS100)

Pat Passlof (b. Brunswick, GA, 1928, d. New York, NY, 2011) was an abstract painter of the New York School whose tireless exploration of color and form gave her work a distinct voice. Having grown up in New York, in 1948 Passlof travelled to Asheville, North Carolina to study at the famed Black Mountain College, where she took classes with Willem de Kooning. Passlof’s early work built on her art education. She utilized biomorphic forms like those in the contemporary work of Arshile Gorky and de Kooning and was influenced by existentialist ideology which informed Abstract Expressionism. However, Passlof was always individualistic and her work was constantly varied in terms of touch, form, and palette. She was never content to repeat herself.

By the 1960s her palette began to lighten. She used repeated patterns and marks across the canvas to create dynamic rhythms. She drew upon experiences and memories, as noted by titles referring to people and places. However, she never believed in narrative in painting, even when, in later years, her work became peopled by centaurs, nymphs, and horses. Her work often suggested abstracted landscapes, like the later work of Claude Monet, although Passlof often worked in a vertical format. Passlof’s work was recently acquired by the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and Crystal Bridges Museum.

(SUFO030)

Susan Fortgang (b. New York, NY, 1944) is an abstract painter who has maintained a dedicated studio practice since the 1960s. She approaches each canvas as an experiment, working out a specific problem or trying something new with every painting. Through this mode of working, Fortgang has created decades-long series of works in which no two paintings are the same, nor is her practice codified. She creates paintings with a physical presence, often using thick layers of paint to create textured surfaces or iridescent medium so that her works create different optical effects depending on lighting or as the viewer moves in space.

Untitled, 1955

(CNIV011)

Costantino Nivola (1911–1988) was an Italian sculptor and muralist who grew up in Orani, a small village in Sardinia. As a young adolescent, Nivola worked locally as an apprentice stonemason. After fleeing fascist Italy in 1939, Nivola moved to New York and became a friend and disciple of the famed architect Le Corbusier. In 1950, he developed his singular technique of sandcasting, a method of casting plaster or concrete sculptures from molds made in sand. These works, which combine the texture of sand with the permanence of stone, represent a seamless integration of sculpture and architecture, and launched Nivola into the forefront of a heated international debate over the integration of the visual arts with architecture, the so-called “synthesis of the arts”. His work fuses ancient and contemporary mediums to explore the folklore and prehistoric art of Sardinia, focusing on themes of motherhood, nature, and community. The Museo Nivola, located in his birthplace, hosts the largest collection of his works.

FUTURA2000 (born Leonard Hilton McGurr; New York, NY, 1955) is a graffiti pioneer who began painting subways in the late 1970s. In 1980 he painted the iconic whole car titled “Break,” which was recognized for its abstraction rather than a focus on lettering. This painting established some of the enduring aesthetic motifs and approaches FUTURA2000 would explore over the decades that followed. The artist’s work reveals his interest in a futuristic aesthetic. He has long been fascinated by science fiction and the space age, and was an early adopter to sophisticated computer technology and video gaming. In his paintings we see certain motifs relating to these interests: the Pointman: an alien, robotic-like figure, and a form that has been called an atom-shape, but which is ultimately about perpetual movement. Perhaps most distinctive is the thin, refined line that FUTURA2000 achieves using spray paint. This is contrasted to the larger mists of color area, and to more gestural brush marks. Many of his paintings were made flat on the floor, and evoke the energy of moving around the perimeter of the painting, yet approaching the work with a deliberate elegance.  A major retrospective of FUTURA2000’s work, Futura2000: Breaking Out, is on view at the Bronx Museum of the Arts until March 30, 2025.

Huê Thi Hoffmaster (b. Lancaster, PA, 1982) is a painter whose language of energetic lines and masses of color read alternately as calligraphic script, abstract still lifes, and bodies in conversation. The son of Vietnamese and American parents, Hoffmaster now lives and works in Weston, Connecticut. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied with Jan Baltzell, Alex Kanevsky, and Bruce Samuelson, and spent his early career exploring the full spectrum of abstraction and representation; his current work reflects the formal breadth of his vision. Oscillating between improvisation and meticulous rendition, the floral bouquets of Hoffmaster’s compositions combine delicate blossoms with heavy bursts of color. The arrangements alternatively materialize as portrait-like studies and playful scenes. Hoffmaster’s thickets of paint threaten to outgrow the boundaries of his canvas as he actively cultivates tension—between Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions, intuition and intention, stillness and action.

Basie Allen (b. New York, NY, 1989) is a poet and painter who mines his experiences living in both urban and rural spaces as inspiration for his work. Through a process of layering text, collage, and paint transfer, Allen seeks to mimic the dimensional chaos of a city or natural landscape.
